Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide a rotary shaft sealing device having stable performance and free from seal breakdown without increasing the seal length by varying the axial depth of the screw seal groove in the axial direction in the liquid seal of shaft.
CONSTITUTION: A screw groove 4c cut in the outer periphery of a supply and exhaust pipe 4 in the direction opposite to the direction of rotation has a reducing depth toward the low pressure side. The seal is effected by making the use of pumping effect provided between stationary surface 85 and screw groove 4c. The depth of the groove is set such that the radius of the groove bottom is equal to or greater than the radius of the gas-liquid boundary which is related to the water pressure on the stationary wall surface at the rated rpm. Thus, the gas-liquid boundary is not produced within the screw groove, and the seal breakdown can be prevented without need for increasing the seal length beyond the required length. Also, without the gas-liquid boundary formed in the screw groove and with the liquid always in contact with the groove bottom, the pumping effect can be improved, and the length required for the screw seal can be reduced.
