Abstract

PURPOSE: To mitigate a pressure of sealing fluid flowed into a cut off section by a method wherein the cut off section is formed on packings contacting with a main shaft and divided into a plurality of pieces at the ends of the sliding surfaces thereof at a high pressure side of the sealing fluid.
CONSTITUTION: A radial pressing force due to a back pressure (substantially equal to the high pressure P1 at an inlet side of cooling water) of the packing 4, which is generated due to the inflow of the cooling water, is mitigated by the high pressure P1 of the cooling water at the cut off section 9. According to this method, the surface pressure at the sliding surface is not increased compared with a case of the same packing without the cut off section 9, a less expensive water film is formed at the sliding surface, a local interruption of the water film at the sliding surface is reduced and an amount of abrasion of the packing 4 may be decreased.
