Abstract
PURPOSE: To form a stable water film on a sliding surface and to improve use life by boring round holes of adequate depth and diameter in the sliding surfaces of a multiple-split packing contacted with the outside periphery of a rotary shaft and introducing a sealing fluid on high-pressure side into the holes.
CONSTITUTION: In a shaft seal, a packing box 3 is disposed between a main shaft 1 and an upper cover 2 opposed to the periphery of the shaft 1. In the box 3, packings 4 are arranged in plural layers in the axial direction, and pressed in the radial direction by garter springs 6 through packing holder member 5. A round hole 9 of adequate depth and diameter is bored in the sliding surface of each packing 4, and a groove 10 in connection with the hole 9 is provided for introducing cooling water from the side of a high pressure P1 (that is, the inlet side for the cooling water; the outlet side is at a low pressure P2). By the inflow of the cooling water from the crevice of each packing 4, a high pressure P1 roughly the same with the cooling water pressure at the inlet of the box 3 is provided at the back portion of the packing 4 in the box 3, so that a stable water film can be formed.
