Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:A compound shown by the formula I (Ms is methanesulfonyl; R1 and R2 an OH or form di-O-isopropylidene).
EXAMPLE: 5-Dioxy-1,2-O-isopropylidene-5-C-(1'-hept-2',5'-trans, trans-dienyl)-3-O- mesyl-α-D-xylo-pentofuranose.
USE: A synthetic intermediate for various kind of organic compounds. Especially a synthetic intermediate for Cerulenin, an antibiotic having antifungal and antimicrobial activities.
PROCESS: An alcohol derivative shown by the formula II is reacted with methanesulfonylchloride in the presence of a base, e.g., triethylamine, to give a mesyl derivative shown by the formula III, to which an acid (preferably trifluoroacetic acid, acetic acid, dilute hydrochloric acid) is added so that isopropyl group is hydrolyzed to prepare a furanose derivative shown by the formula I. The compound shown by the formula II is novel one.
