Abstract

PURPOSE: To recover cadmium and nickel in a high yield without carrying out the extracting treatment by a method wherin an opening portion is provided to an outer shell case of an electric storage cell and heated within a nonoxidative atmosphere.
CONSTITUTION: An opening portion is provided to an outer shell case of a waste electric storage cell by drilling or slitting. If this electric storage cell is heated at 700W1,600°C within a nonoxidative atmosphere, the electrolyte solution is evaporated and cadmium is oxidized to cadmium oxide. Subsequently, nickel acts as a reducing agent by the difference of the compatibility between oxygen and nickel and cadmium to reduce and volatilize cadmium. This reduced cadmium gas is introduced into a condenser to be cooled and metal cadmium is recovered. The nickel component is remained as a residue. By this method, a nickel cadmium electric storage cell can be treated easily and availably and the reutilization of resources is enabled.
