Abstract

PURPOSE:To increase the discharge capacity of a battery, by using a positive electrode shaped like a thin layer and made up with powder manganese dioxide, conductive carbon powder and an ionomer resin of the ethylene series. CONSTITUTION:A positive electrode 1 is formed by adding an ionomer resin of the ethylene series as a binder to powdery manganese dioxide and conductive carbon powder and forming the resultant mixture into a layer. The ionomer resin of the ethylene series is obtained by chemically bonding a copolymer of ethylene and a carboxylic acid ester with a metallic ion, and it forms emulsion with water relatively easily. The emulsion can be combined with the manganes dioxide and carbon powder and dried into a stable filmlike positive electrode 1. Said resin exhibits a sufficient binder effect at a resin density lower than a few percent, and is capable of reducing the viscosity of the pastelike mixture due to its large surface activity, thereby facilitating the release of bubbles therefrom. Therefore, for the aforementioned reasons, the filling-up amount of manganese dioxide can be increased and the capacity of discharge can be increased.
