Abstract
PURPOSE:To splice optical fibers at high efficiency, by placing opposing plural electrode pairs in parallel arrangement, disposing optical fibers of plural pairs at right angle to the electrode pairs in the plane containing all electrode pairs, and discharging and fusion-welding simultaneously. CONSTITUTION:For example, two sets of discharge electrode pairs 3 and placed parallel, and an electric power source 4 is connected to the electrode pairs 3 through a high speed selector switch 8. Within the plane containing all electrode pairs 3, plural pairs of optical fibers 1 are placed horizontally end to end, at right angle to the electrode pairs 3. By operating the high speed switch 8 using thyristor or the like, each pair of the discharge electrode is discharged alternately to fusion-weld and splice the optical fibers. The electrode pairs may be used two or more sets. Even in the case of two sets of electrode pairs, uniform discharge region may be widened by setting proper the mutual interval, so that about ten fibers may be fusion-welded simultaneously, thus realizing high efficiency splicing.
