Abstract

PURPOSE:To suppress a leak of light emission from pilot discharges in a device, by arranging the amount of distance between an anode and cathode less than the groove width of a pilot discharge region. CONSTITUTION:In the inner face of a front glass 1, blackened films 7 are provided for shielding the emission of light from pilot discharges. Anodes 3 are provided on top of said blackened films 7. These of the anodes 3, cathodes 4, dielectric layers 5 and the blackened films 7 are provided on two sheets of glass plates 1, 2 by the method of printing technology or the like. In the device, a mercury and Penning gas of neon and argon and the like are sealed. Though a distance d0 between the anode 3 and the cathode 4 is decreased for a smaller amount of discharge cell pitch of the device, the distance d0 is arranged in such a manner as to satisfy the relation of d0<=l1 with respect to a groove width l1 of a pilot discharge region I. Further wall layers 8 are provided between regions I, II. In this way, the leak of light emission from the pilot discharge can be almost perfectly prevented.
