Abstract

PURPOSE: To form a protective coating excellent in corrosion resistance, surface appearance, adhesion of coating on the surface of zinc plate or galvanized plate, by treating the zinc plate etc. with aqueous alkali soln., then with aqueous tannin or tannic acid soln. of low concn.
CONSTITUTION: Zinc plate, galvanized plate, or zinc die-cast product is treated with an aqueous soln. contg. one or more members selected from the group consisting of hydroxide, silicate, phosphate, or borate of alkali metals, of a pH not lower than 12.5, in order to activate the surface of the zinc. Then the product is treated by immersing it in an aqueous soln. of 40W60°C contg. as a principal component 1W5g/l tannin or tannic acid for 5W60sec. After the treatment, it is taken out of the soln. and is dried. Hereby a protective coating having corrosion resistance equal to that obtained by chromate method, nearly colorless and transparent, excellent in appearance, and adhesion of coating is formed without causing environmental pollution, thereby making waste water treatment useless.
