Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a base material having high water-proofing and water repellent properties, by contacting a paraffin emulsion and a basic inorg. material or an org. fibrous material under an alkaline condition.
CONSTITUTION: (A) A paraffinic hydrocarbon with m.p. of 40W80°C and (B) an oxidized paraffin with acid value of 10W70 in an amount of 0.03W1.0 times that of (A) are emulsified in water of which an amount is 1W20wt% to a total amount of (A) and (B) in the presence of a sucrose aliphatic acid ester of which an amount is 1W20wt% to a total amount of (A) and (B) to obtain a paraffin emulsion. Subsequently, to this paraffin emulsion, a compound of a Group IWIII element of the Periodic Table (e.g. NaOH, KOH) is added to adjust said emulsion to an alkaline condition and this emulsion is contacted with a base material selected from a basic inorg. material, such as cement mortar or rockwool, or an org. fibrous material, such as a wood fiberboard or a fiber fabric.
