Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a base material for light transmission fiber having a uniform and foam-free composition, by the procedure in which a specific substance, e.g., Ge, P, etc., is coated on the surfaces of a fine quartz powder (of 1mum or less) by a chemical vapor deposition, etc., and then the coated fine particles are pressed and sintered. CONSTITUTION:The quartz powder (fine particles of 1mum or less) 22 is scattered into the housing portion 21 of the vacuum container 29 on the one hand, and on the other hand, O2 gas is introduced from the nozzle 28 and also the oxide or oxyhalide of P, S, etc., as a coating raw material is introduced from the nozzle 30 in order to uniformly coat said fine particles (SiO2) 22 with said oxide, etc., by a mere deposition or chemical vapor deposition. The fine particles thus treated are molded by pressing and then sintered and vitrified in the He-O2 atmosphere in a heating furnace. Thus, because the fine quartz particles are coated with a low-melting oxide, a base material for light transmission fiber with uniform composition which is low in vitrification temperature and free of foams due to the decomposition of Ge2O3 as in the case of the conventional methods can be obtained.
