Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce the metal powder which does not cause sintering and is nevertheless good in reaction efficiency and has less danger of ignition by dispersing metal compound powder such as of iron oxalate into silicone oil, blowing H2 and reduction-treating the same under heating.
CONSTITUTION: Metal oxide composed primarily of Fe (oxyhydroxide) and metal compound powder such as of oxalate of Fe, Ni or Co is dispersed into silicone oil. Thence, this dispersion is heated and reduction-treated under H2 blowing. This yields the ferromagnetic metal powder used for magnetic recording media such as magnetic tapes. This method inhibits the sintering of the particles because the silicone oil interposes among the particles and further it improves the contact between H2 and particle surfaces because the reduced by-products of the particle surfaces are discharged to outside the system from the liquid phase owing to stirring of the silicone oil, thus the H2 consumption can be small.
