Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled powder having superior magnetic characteristics and suitable for use as a material for the recording element of a magnetic recording medium by heat reducing powder of nickel-contg. α-iron oxyhydroxide obtd. from ferrous hydroxide and nickelous hydroxide.
CONSTITUTION: A mixed soln. of ferrous salt and nickelous salt is mixed with an alkali soln. to coprecipitate ferrous hydroxide and nickelous hydroxide, or ferrous hydroxide and nickelous hydroxide are precipitated separately and mixed. The precipitate is treated with an oxygen-contg. gas to obtain hardly branched needlike powder of nickel-contg. α-iron oxyhydroxide having relatively small particle size and uniform particle size distribution. The powder is then heat-reduced or further oxidized to obtain nickel-contg. magnetic magnetite powder or nickel-contg. magnetic maghemite powder having hardly branched fine particle shape.
