CONSTITUTION: The ring closure reaction of a tetrahydroisoquinoline N-oxide of formula I (R is lower alkyl; R1, R2 are hydroxyl, lower alkoxy) is conducted in a solvent such as methanol, propanol or acetic acid at 0W100°C, preferably in the presence of a catalyst such as ferrous sulfate to produce a protoberberine of formula II (R3 is H, hydroxyl, lower alkoxy). For example, the ring closure of reticulin N- oxide of formula III can produce coreximine of formula IV and scoulerin of formula V.
