Abstract

PURPOSE:To make it possible to facilitate taking the focus by providing lightness and darkness discrimination reference levels to count picture element outputs between these levels. CONSTITUTION:The picture element output of image sensor 4 which is gated by gates 6 and 7 and corresponds to the light part and the dark part of an object is held in the input side of amplifiers A1 and A6. Light part discrimination reference level V1 and dark part discrimination reference level V2 which are corrected according to transmitivity of the object are output from amplifiers A4 and A5 of adder circuits respectively. When these reference levels and the output of amplifier 5 are supplied to amplifiers A7 and A8 respectively, picture element output pulses between levels V1 and V2 are output from NAND element 9. The number of these pulses is counted in 10 for every scanning and is displayed on display unit 12. Consequently, if the number of pulses is set to a minimum while changing gradually the focus of the image pickup device, the focus can be taken simply.
