Abstract

PURPOSE:To reduce vibrations, noises, and weight of a cylinder block by diminishing the area of a skirt part shaping a lower hollow chamber of the main body of the block by means of a notch. CONSTITUTION:The main body 6 of a cylinder block is composed of a solid upper part A with cylinder-liner insert holes 5 and a lower part B consisting of a hollow chamber opened downward for accomodating a crank shaft or the like. A notch part 9 is provided in a skirt part 4b of a thin plate forming the hollow chamber of the lower part B to reduce the area of the skirt part 4b, and covered with an oil pan 11 to be fixed to the lower part of the main body 6 of the cylinder block. The substantial reduction of the area of the skirt part 4b serves to reduce the generation area of vibrations and noises and the weight of the the block. The covering by the oil pan serves to prevent the outward scattering of lubricating oil and entering of dust.
