Abstract
PURPOSE: To improve welding efficiency and quality by specifying the spacing between plural welding electrodes, applying forced magnetic fields to molten pool and controlling the flow of molten metal.
CONSTITUTION: One of welding electrodes 1a, 1b is made DC positive polarity and the other electrode DC opposite polarity. A magnetism generating coil is installed around these two electrodes. The interelectrode spacing is set in a range from 1.5W 10.0 times the diameter of the wire used. The welding current flows radially into the molten pool with the respective electrodes as a center and therefore the molten steel under each electrode rotates in the mutually opposite direction in accordance with Fleming's left-hand rule. The direction of exciting current or the disposition of the two electrodes is so selected that this molten steel flow directs the welding advance direction at both ends of the molten pool. The above method prevents the formation of welding defects such as undercuts and slag inclusions and make possible the higher speed of welding.
