Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain isodrimenin useful as an important intermediate for conversion to various physiologically active substances in high yield, by treating a novel compound readily prepared from β-ionone in short steps with a reducing agent.
CONSTITUTION: A compound of formula I is reduced with a reducing agent, e.g. NaBH4 or LiAlH4, in an ether solvent, e.g. tetrahydrofuran or dioxane, at 0°C to room temperature to give isodrimenin of formula II. The compound of formula I can be obtained by treating a novel compound of formula III, prepared from β-ionone in short steps, with a water-solvent alkali, and by oxidizing the resulting compound of formula IV with a Jones reagent in an organic solvent, e.g. acetone, at 0°C to room temperature.
