Abstract

PURPOSE: Titled compound useful as perfume is produced by hydrolysis of 2-chloronorcamphor in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: The hydrolysis of 2-chloro-2-cyano-7-alkylidenebicyclo[2,2,1] heptane of formulaIis conducted in the presence of a base such as potassium hydroxide in a solvent such as dimethyl sulfoxide at room temperature to 50°C to form 7-alkylidenenorcamphor of formula II. After isolatd or not isolated, the compound is reduced by hydrogenation with the equimolar amount of hydrogen in the presence of 1W3wt%, based on the weight of the compound of formula II, of a hydrogenation catalyst such as platinum oxide at room temperature to 50°C.
