Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain anhydrous noncrystalline titania with superior ion adsorbing power by treating a crystal-phase alkali metal titanate cpd. with an aq. acid soln. and dehydrating the resulting titania hydrate at a specified temp.
CONSTITUTION: Anatase-type TiO2 and an alkali constituent such as K2CO3 are blended, heated, and melt-reacted. The resulting cpd. having an alkali metal titanate compsn. of formula M2O.nTiO2 (where M is Na, K, Rb or Cs and n is 1W 6) is treated with an aq. soln. of an acid such as hydrochloric acid to extract the M2O component, forming titania hydrate of formula TiO2.nH2O. This hydrate is then dehydrated by heating to a temp. below the temp. at which the hydrate is crystallized to anatase-type titania. Thus, anhydrous noncrystalline titania is obtd. It is lacking in hygroscopic and water absorbing properties, and can be used as an adsorption purifier for gas, a filter, etc.
