Abstract
PURPOSE: To improve workability and to prevent polymer scale from being formed in a condenser, by a method wherein a mist separator is provided in the neighborhood of a port for introducing vinyl chloride vapor into the condenser when vinyl chloride is polymerized by using a polymerizer having a reflux condenser.
CONSTITUTION: An apparatus for vinyl chloride polymn. is composed of a polymerizer 1 and a multiple tube reflux condenser 2. Water medium is used in the polymerizer 1. Vinyl chloride vapor which is vaporized in the polymerizer 1 is condensed in the condenser 2 and recycled as liquid to the polymerizer 1 where vinyl chloride is polymerized in the water medium. In the neighborhood of an introducing port for vinyl chloride vapor to the condenser 2 of the apparatus, there is provided a separator 3 for mist entrained in the vinyl chloride vapor. The separator is made of a laminate of glass fiber. Thus, the mist is caught by the separator, and removed from gas supplied to the condenser 2. The formation of scale on the inner surface of the condenser 2 is prevented. Washing time of the condenser 2 is shortened. Heat transfer coefficient of the condenser 2 is enhanced, and maintenance cost is reduced.
