Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain a Tb- and Dy-base macro-magnetostricitive alloy having superior magnetostrictive characteristics and toughness by adding Tb and Dy to an Fe- Mn alloy in a specified ratio to form an intermetallic cpd. CONSTITUTION:This alloy consists of, by wt., Fe 8-38%, Mn 0.01-25%, Tb 0.1-35% and the balance Dy and has a Tb to Dy ratio of 0.001-0.5. The Fe and Mn in this alloy form a Laves type intermetallic cpd. together with Tb and Dy. The cpd. occupies 50vol% or more of the alloy structure, and the balance of the two-phase structure is a rare earth metal alpha-phase based on Tb and Dy. This alloy superior magnetostrictive characteristics and toughness, and it is suitably used as a magnetostrictive substance for a principal member of a magnetic-mechanical displacement conversion device for a precise displacement control driving section.
