Abstract

PURPOSE:To stably form a uniform, highly adhesive insulating layer without pro- ducing excessive FeO in high temperature finish annealing by depositing a specified amount of Si cpd. on silicon steel strip before decarbonizing annealing. CONSTITUTION:On the surface of cold rolled directional silicon steel strip, Si cpd. such as silicic acid (SiO2.xH2O) is deposited in amount of 0.5-7.0mg/m<2> based on Si weight. This is then subject to decarbonizing annealing under atmosphere contg. H2-H2O so as to form oxide layer contg. SiO2. This is coated with material essential consisting of MgO as annealing separator, is wound in coil shape, undergoes high temperature finish annealing under H2 atmosphere, so that SiO2-MgO based glass layer is formed. The method expands selecting range of decarbonizing annealing and provides a uniform, good property insulating layer.
