Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound consisting mainly of decabromodipheyl ether, useful as a flame retarder of a synthetic resin, in high yield, by the two-stage reaction at different temperature, in the solvent of perchloroethylene.
CONSTITUTION: Diphenyl ether, perchloroethylene as a solvent, and Al powder as a catalyst, are stirred together, and a brominating agent e.g. bromine, in an amount enough to make the diphenyl ether into decabromodiphenyl ether, is added to the mixture at 70°C or below, and heated to a temperature at which the brominating agent will not remain. The resulting mixture is heated at a decomposition temperature of tetrachlorodibromoethane, e.g. at 80°C or above, and a polybromodiphenyl ether and the unreacted diphenyl ether are further brominated, if any, with the bromine produced through the decomposition, to obtain a polybromodiphenyl ether consisting mainly of decabromodiphenyl ether.
