Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide a desired product with high stereo-selectivity and an optical yield from carbonyl compound, by modifying nickel catalyst with inorganic salts and optically active substances.
CONSTITUTION: Stereo-selective reduction catalyst such as Raney nickel is dipped in an aqueous solution contg. one or more inorganic salts such as sodium bromide and sodium chloride, and one or more optically active substances such as optically active tartaric acid and optically active lactic acid, to modify the catalyst with such substances. The modified catalyst is used to hydrogenate a carbonyl group in a carbonyl cpd. such as methyl acetoacetate and ethyl acetoacetate under normal condition with reduction pressure of atmospheric pressure to 150kg/cm2. After completion of the reaction, catalyst is filtered and recovered, and solvent is removed. This provides a high optical yield of a secondary alcohol such as methyl 3-hydroxybutyrate.
