Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the title curable composition having improved excessive temperature sensitivity of asphalt, by compounding asphalt with a specific highly compatible epoxy resin.
CONSTITUTION: A composition composed of (A) 30W99wt% of asphalt, (B) 1W 70wt% of glycidyl ether of o- or p-alkyl-substituted phenol-modified aromatic hydrocarbon formaldehyde resin, and (C) an epoxy resin hardener (e.g. polymercaptan) sufficient to effect the substantial curing of the epoxy resin. The modified formaldehyde resin is pref. prepared by the dehydration condensation of (A) 100pts.wt. of an aromatic hydrocarbon formaldehyde resin obtained by condensing (a) m- xylene, mesitylene, naphthalene, etc. with (b) formaldehyde in the presence of a strong acid, with (B) 50W150pts. of o- or p-alkyl-substituted phenol, in the presence of an acid catalyst.
