Abstract
PURPOSE: To make it possible to measure actually solidified layer thickness of a cast billet during the time from the melted metal surface lowering to solidification completion with a high precision, by generating a white band layer dependent upon negative segregation by giving external force to the unsolidified melted steel part to flow the melted steel reversely.
CONSTITUTION: The casting speed, the pulling-out speed, etc., are so set previously that the tip part of internal unsolidified melted steel a of cast billet A may be placed in positions corresponding to the first and the second rolls 41 and 42 out of pinch roll groups 41W46 consisting of the first to the sixth segments. Under this condition, operations are performed to reduce gradually pressures of rolls 41 and 42 just after cast billet A which goes out from mold 2 passes pinch roll 41 through roller apron groups 31W38. Therefore, internal melted steel a of cast billet A expands to the outside direction. Next, when the melted metal surface level of mold 2 is lowered, pressures of rolls 41 and 42 are returned to previous pressing pressures. The melted steel is flowed reversely in this manner to generate a white band layer, and the white band layer is measured after solidification, so that the thickness of the solidified layer can be measured actually with a very high precision.
