Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve welding performance without impairing bead appearance, slag peelability, welding defect resistance, etc. by subjecting the narrow gap portion to cumulated layer welding at one layer one pass at decreased distance between the preceding and subsequent electrodes, in butt welding of thick steel plates.
CONSTITUTION: In butt welding of thick steel plates of plate thickness 30mm or more, the narrow gap portion of groove width 8W30mm and groove angle up to 20° is cumulated-layer-welded at one layer 1 pass by a submerged arc welding by making the distance between the centers of the ends of the preceding electrode wire and subsequent electrode wire at 15mm or less. According to this method, the concave beads of a large degree of depression are formed without producing any undercut and the good slag peelability and the sound weld metal free from any welding defect may be obtained.
