Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve the characteristics of friction loss, maximum explosion pressure, durability, noise, NOx, etc., by providing a plunger which is controlled by a thermosensitive element to go into or out of a combustion chamber to reduce the compression ratio of an engine depending on the temperature rise of the engine.
CONSTITUTION: A holder 7 is secured on a cylinder head 4 so that an enclosed chamber 6 which communicates with a combustion chamber 1 through a connection hole 5 is defined. The tip of a plunger 8 slidably fitted in the connection hole 5 is protruded into the combustion chamber 1. A bimetal 9 is mounted in the enclosed chamber 6. The butt of the plunger 8 is secured on the bimetal 9. The bimetal is caused to repond to the temperature of cooling water flowing through a water jacket 10. The plunger 8 is moved into the enclosed chamber 6 with the rise in the temperature of an engine to reduce its compression ratio.
