Abstract

PURPOSE: To suppress absorption of O2 gas into molten steel and make possible underwater casting which has hitherto been considered difficult to be put to practical use by containing 1 to 35wt% of the specific organic material in the water used in the underwater casting method of molten metal.
CONSTITUTION: Molten steel 2 from a ladle 1 reaches the copper-made casting mold 5 in a water vessel 7 and organic material (preferably one which is water soluble and of low boilding point) such as methyl alcohol or the like which produces reducing gases such as CO and CH4 by decomposing by the effect of the heat retained in the molten steel 2 is beforehand contained in cooling liquid 4. Since the O2 through decomposition of steam produced at the time when the molten steel 2 is cast in water is consumed by the reducing gases which the foregoing organic material produces, the rate of O2 absorption in the molten steel is reduced and the underwater casting of high quality of less O2 contents is obtained.
