Abstract

PURPOSE: To remarkably enhance the machinability of a Ti-based sintered hard alloy by adding a specific amt. of oxygen in a stabilized form.
CONSTITUTION: In a sintered alloy consisting of B1 type solid soln. hard phases and metal binder phases, the hard phases have a compsn. represented by formula I, wherein IVa group metals are one or more of Ti, Zr and Hf, and VIa group metals are one or more of Cr, Mo and W. TiO, Ti(C,O), Ti(N,O) or Ti(C,N,O) powder is esp. used, and up to 50 mol% of the powder may be replaced with IVa and VIa group metals. The hard phases are represented by a compsn. in the region occupied by ABCD or EFGH. As the binder metal, one or more out of iron group metals, Al, Cu, Ag, Si, B, etc. are used in an amt. of 0.2W25%. By keeping CO partial press. at 0.01W300 Torr in a process for sintering the alloy, removal of O2 is prevented and O2 is added in the form of a stable cpd.
