Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve measurement accuracy by radiating laser beam to the surface of steel material under production and measuring the length of the steel material in the absence of contact by the use of diffration effect.
CONSTITUTION: When a steel material 3 is radiated with a laser light source 1, viewing the laser rays reflected from the surface of the steel material 3 from observation plane 4 lets the diffracted image 5 assuming granular fringe patterns be seen. The apparatus utilizes this diffraction image 5, wherein as the steel material 3 moves the granular spots 5' move and the light passing through a slit 6 is made to pulse-form signal by a photo detector 7. This signal is amplified and pulses are generated in correspondence to the signals exceeding a fixed voltage by a comparator 9. The number of said pulses is counted with a counter 10. The count value thereof is proportional to the length of the steel material 3 having passed the radiation point and therefore it is converted with a length conversion circuit 11 and the length is displayed in a display device 13.
