Abstract

PURPOSE: To realize liquid crystal elements having permanence, durability, and reliability, by coating the substrate surface containing electrodes with a composition containing Crown c compound.
CONSTITUTION: Electrode substrates 1, 2, of which one piece at least is transparent, is coated with a coating layer 7, which is either a resin having chemically bonded hetero-great-cyclic compound (derivative) generally called as Crown or a resin mixture having Crown compound trapped in the resin matrix. The substrates 1, 2 are secured at the outer circumference parts thereof with adhesive 4 by way of spacer 3, and liquid crystal 6 is charged in from an injection port 5. According to the layer 7, for instance, homeotropic orientation is provided to the nematic liquid crystal, and focal conic or homeotropic orientation to the cholesteric liquid crystal. Also, by grinding the surface of layer 7 in a certain direction, homogeneous orientation may be provided to the nematic liquid crystal or smectic liquid crystal.
