Abstract
PURPOSE: To improve the performance of the cathode with a better adherence between the rion base material and the coating material through a sintered coating of the base material with a cathode activating substance following a treatment by a solution of perchloric acid.
CONSTITUTION: An iron base material (flat steel plate) is immersed into a solution of perchloric acid with a concentration of 30 to 50% by weight at a normal temperature, preferably 30 to 60°C for 10 minutes or more, for example, several hours. Then, after it is washed and dried, a cathode activating substance is sintered on the base material by a established means. In orther words, after a solution in which metal compound containing one or more kinds of metal elememts belonging to the group VIII metal is applied on the base material, a chemcial change is caused in a part of the metal compound to form a sintered coat mainly composed of the corresponding metal. A cathode thus obtained provides a low hydrogen overvoltage and a less secular deterioration of activity generally as such because the perchloric acid treatment in the process lowers the sintering temperature thereby preventing the deterioration of active substance.
