Abstract

PURPOSE: Anodically treated ferrous material is coated with cathode-active material and sintered to provide a cathode having securely adhered coated material and enhanced performance property.
CONSTITUTION: Ferrous base material such as general construction steel is degreased and rinsed with water, and then anodically treated by process of immersion or spraying using system containing phosphoric acid such as manganese phosphate, zinc phosphate and the like. The anodically treated base material is then coated with solution or suspension containing, for example Ni(SCN)2, or more generally metalic compound consisting of one or more of 8 group metal element, and heated. The metalic compound is subjected to at least partial chemical change and forms into sintered coated layer consisting essentially of corresponding metal. The cathode obtained by this process is favorably compared to non-treated cathode such that it has a lower hydrogen overvoltage and better adhesion of base and coating layer resulting in longer service life of high cathode activity.
