Abstract

PURPOSE:To provide an effective steam valve, by melting respective contact surfaces between valve disc and valve spindle, valve disc and valve seat with laser beam, then by cooling the molten zones rapidly to form amorphous metallic layers at the contact surfaces. CONSTITUTION:Respective contact surfaces 10, 9 between valve disc 4 and valve spindle 3, valve disc 4 and valve seat 5 of a steam valve used for power-generating steam turbine is irradiated with a laser beam 12 in order to melt and unite with each other. Then the molten zone is cooled rapidly to form amorphous metallic layers 11 on both surfaces 10, 9. These layers 11 are very hard and prevented satisfactorily from burning or erosion due to steam. By this method, because there is no residual stress due to metals of different kinds, formation of stress corrosion cracking is prevented during operation of the turbine, consequently operation safety is improved.
