Abstract

PURPOSE: To form surface hardened layers of high erosion resistance by irradiating plasma jet flames using an inert gas added with nitrogen as a working gas to steam turbine blades consisting of 12% Cr alloy steel.
CONSTITUTION: Plasma jet flames 5 are irradiated by using a plasma touch 6 to steam turbine blades made of 12% Cr alloy steel. An inert gas such as Argon added with 30% gaseous nitrogen is used as a working gas and an 100% gaseous nitrogen is used as a shielding gas 4. Plasma arcs are generated by flowing electric current between a nozzle 2 and a tungsten electrodes 1 and plasma jet flames 5 are irradiated to heat the blades 7 without melting the same, whereby the hardened layers of high erosion resistance are formed on the surfaces of the blades 7 in a short time.
