Abstract

PURPOSE: To enhance the voltage-current characteristics as well as to avoid the deterioration due to the heat cycle for the Nb-barrier-Nb Josephson element, by using the oxide of Ti, Zr, Hf, etc. with the film thickness set to 1∼100nm for the barrier.
CONSTITUTION: Superconductive film 2 of the first layer of the compound formed with Nb, Nb alloy and Nb-group metal is evaporated on substrate 1 through heating of the electron beam within a vacuum device, and the surface of film 2 is covered with barrier 3 of the oxide composed of Ti, Zr, Hf, etc. with the film thickness set to 1∼100nm. Furtheremore, second layer superconductive film 4, composed of the compound of Nb, Nb alloy and Nb-group metal or the compound of Pb, Pb alloy and Pb-group metal, is coated on barrier 3. As a result, the voltage-current characteristics can be improved greatly for the element, thus reducing the leak current caused by the microshort down to nearly zero.
