Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the title compound which is powder easily soluble in cold water and having low aging characteristics such a blocking property, useful as a deodorizer, grounting agent, etc, economically, by mixing gloyoxal with a specific glycol and dehydrating under reduced pressure.
CONSTITUTION: 2,3-Dihydroxy-1,4-dioxane is prepared in high purity, by (1) mixing glyoxal (1 mole) wih ethylene glycol (0.9-1.5 moles, pref 1.03-1.2 moles), (2) dehydrating the mixture at 40-70°C under a reduced pressure of ≤150 mmHg, pref.≤100 mmHg, and (3) filtering the precipitated crystals of the objectve compound. The glyoxal used may be a commercial aqueous solution (40-50% aqueous solution), or a concentrated solution obtained by dehydrating thereof
