Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain high quality esters especially useful as a lubricating oil base, from pyhydric alcohol esters containing partial esters, by the heat treatment in the presence of a solid acid catalyst thereby lowering the hydroxyl number thereof. CONSTITUTION:Complete esters containing partial esters, which are obtained from fatty acides and hindered-type polydric alcohols, are heat-treated at 100-350 deg.C in the presence of a solid acid catalyst in an inert gas or hydrogen atmosphere of a pressure of at most 5kg/cm<2>, by which the partial esters are modified and hydroxyl number is lowered, giving esters of high quality. As the fatty acids, 2-20C linear saturated fatty acids are preferable. The polyhydric alcohols are 5-22C 2-6- hydric hindred alcohols, e.g. trimethylolpropane. Alumina, silica, magnesia, etc. and their mixture are used as the solid acid catalyst. When the reaction is carried out in H2 atmosphere in the presence of a reduction catalyst, carbonyl number can be reduced.
