Abstract
In a process for purifying the exhaust gases of combustion engines, operated at least partly with methanol, by oxidation with oxygen-containing gases, the exhaust gases are reacted with excess oxygen at temperatures above 100 DEG C in the presence of a supported catalyst which is composed of at least two of the aluminates of copper, manganese, nickel and of cerium as active constituents and of pure aluminium oxide as support. To produce this supported catalyst, preferably pure aluminium oxide is pressed with addition of graphite to give mouldings, the graphite is burned off at temperatures of 600 to 700 DEG C, the mouldings are calcined at 1000 to 1200 DEG C, the calcined mouldings are impregnated with at least two of the nitrates of copper and/or of manganese and/or of nickel and/or of cerium in aqueous solution, the metal nitrates drawn into the mouldings are decomposed at temperatures of 350 to 500 DEG C and the metal-oxide-containing mouldings are then calcined at temperatures of 800 to 1100 DEG C.
