PURPOSE:To considerably improve the workability of optical fiber connection by performing cutting and connection of a multiplicity of optical fibers by using the same jig. CONSTITUTION:First, optical fibers which are removed of coverings and primary coating agents by a fixed distance from the end are prepared in the number desired to be cut and are held on the fiber holding part on the left side. In this state, a CO2 laser beam is radiated to the position of a fine line 45 and at this time a substrate 22 is moved backward, then the laser beam 9 subsequently cross-cuts the optical fiber row, causing thermal stress to be induced. Tension is exerted to the optical fibers in which thermal stress has been induced, by operating a micrometer 18, to cut the fibers. In the same manner, the optical fiber row on the right side is cut. At the stage when cutting is over, the right and left cut faces are mated in the position of the fine line 45 by the micrometers 18, 19 after which the CO2 laser beam is radiated to that position. At this time, a lens 4 and an attenuator 7 are moved out from the optical path and the beam is radiated while the substrate 22 is being moved, whereby fusion-welding and connection area ccomplished.
