Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain the cutter for multicore optical fiber which is capable of rapidly and reproductively forming a well-right angled, smooth, and clean end face by a means in which a focused laser beam from a CO2 laser heat source is irradiated onto the fine portion of optical fiber to produce a small evaporation trace for cutting. CONSTITUTION:The laser beam 2 continously emitted from a CO2 laser source is focused by the lens 5, and the optical fiber is placed at nearly its focusing point and the laser beam 3 is vertically moved to the direction of the optical fiber ascis at a fixed speed. When the laser beam 7 is irradiated, the surface of the optical fiber is evaporated to form the small trace 8. The optical fiber 6 is fixed in the V-shaped groove of the optical fiber aligning holder 10, and when the holder 10 is moved, the optical fiber is also moved together and given an evaporation trace at the position 6'. Then, the fiber is moved further, touchs the tool 9, and gradually pushed up, whereupon the optical fiber 6 is cut off at the point where the evaporation trace is given.
