Abstract
PURPOSE:In a process of heating steel material just above the point of Ac3 wherein a phase modification proceeds from alpha to beta, a predetermined stress is added to effect plastic deformation giving rise to a superfine structure, whereby mechanical properties such as toughness and ductility are significantly improve. CONSTITUTION:A steel material is heated at a constant rate from room temperature through the point Ac1 to Ac3 and cooled to room temperature by forced air cooling, mist spray, water cooling and oil cooling. During the whole heating process from Ac1 to Ac3, the steel is continuously loaded with at least 7.5kg/mm.<2> which value is higher than yield strength of austenite phase at a temperature of Ac3 or just above Ac3 to cause 5% plastic deformation. No load is applied during the cooling process. One or two applications of this treatment provides superfine crystal grains with average diameters of 0.5 to 5 microns, which greatly contributes improved mechanical properties such as toughness and ductility.
