Abstract

PURPOSE:A uniform and deep quenching layer is obtained by scanning a material to be quenched with a laser beam having saw tooth wave form, which is composed from a laser beam deflected by a revolving polyhedral mirror. CONSTITUTION:A laser oscillator 1 generates a laser 7. A revolving pyramid-type n-hedral mirror 8 reflects the laser and produces a scanning light beam having rotational angle of 2pis/n. The beam thus formed impinges onto a parabolic mirror 4 and reflects. The reflected beam moves from a to b as the mirror 8 revolves. The moment the mirror 8 reaches to a rotational angle of 2pis/n, the laser rapidly moves from b to c, thus the scanning beam has a one-way tooth saw wave form, the very fast scanning on b-to-c-dotted-line substantially uniformalizes a residing time of scanning beam on the surface of the material 5 thereby producing deep uniform quenched layer on the material 5 to be quanched.
