Abstract

PURPOSE:The intermediate layer of glass with a higher viscosity than those of the core and clad layers at the spinning temperature is provided between the core and clad to prevent the local deformation in the core caused by bubbles emerging during the spinning, thus reducing the transmission loss. CONSTITUTION:Between core 10 and clad 20 is provided intermediate layer 50, which is made of SiO2 glass with a higher viscosity than those of the core and clad at the spinning temperature and has about 3 mum thickness. The provision of the intermediate layer 50 blocks the pressure caused by the expansion of bubble 40, thus reduces the deformation of core 10. The characteristics of transmission loss versus wave length is given as curve A, which is lower than curve B for a conventional fiber not provided with an intermediate layer.
