Abstract

Optical fibre is formed from a core surrounded by a sheath of lower refractive index, the sheath being sepd. from the core by a liquid of lower refractive index than the core. The core is pref. pure SiO2 and the liquid is a silicone. Several such cores may be contained in a common sheath filled with the liquid. There are no stresses set up between core and sheath to produce variations in the refractive index.
