Abstract

PURPOSE:To produce rough surfaces on dull steel rolls for pressing to the desired roughness by means of a controlled laser beam. CONSTITUTION:Roll 1, to be processed, is turned by means of drive unit 9. Laser beam Lo produced by laser oscillator 2 is divided into laser beams L1 and L2 by beam divider-collector 3. Beam divider-collector 3 is moved in the direction of the axis of the roll by drive unit 8. The surface of roll 1 is heated and melted by the irradiation of the laser beam, and fine projections are formed on it. The roughness of the surface of the processed roll is detected by detector 4. Its signal is analyzed by analyzer 7 and is transmitted to control pulse generator 6 and laser oscillation controller 5, and thereby the rotation of beam divider-collector 3 and the output of oscillator 2 are controlled.
