Abstract

PURPOSE:To reduce the surface cracking sensibility of a continuous-cast ingot and to prevent the ingot yield from lowering, in continuous casting of Nb and V-contg. steel, by controlling the N content of the molten steel to below 0.005%. CONSTITUTION:The N content of Nb and V-contg. steel contg. 0.02-0.20% of Nb and/or V is regulated to below 0.005% by minimizing N pickup in refining or by degassing. Thus, dissolved N precipitatable at 1000-750 deg.C is controlled to a very slight amt. When this molten steel is continuous-cast, precipitation of Nb(CN) and V(CN) on the austenite grain boundaries is controlled in the below 10 mm thick surface layer of the resulting ingot. At the same time, precipitation of film-like proeutectoid ferrite on the austenite grain boundaries is prevented in gamma-alpha transformation in the temp. range of the Ar3 transformation point +150 deg.C-the Ar3 - 100 deg.C, a continuous-cast ingot with no surface crack is obtd., and an yield lowering due to surface cracks is minimized.
