Abstract

PURPOSE: To manufacture N, N'-disubstitued 4,4'-bipyridinium salt as herbicide at low cost, by using liquid organic compound soluble in N-substituted pyridinium salt and also, soluble in water turning out a specific pH as electrolyte and then, carrying out electrolytic reduction of N-substituted pyridinium salt.
CONSTITUTION: Liquid orgnaic compound (for example, methanol) soluble in N-substituted pyridinium salt (for example, N-methylpyridinium chloride) and also, having pH more than six at the time of dissolving in water, is added to the anode room 2 and the cathode room 3. N-substituted pyridinium salt is supplied from the supply opening 20 of the electrolyte tank 8. Next, electrolytic reduction of N- substituted pyridinium salt is carried out and cathode solution is supplied to the tank 12 and then, oxidation reaction is carried out sending the air from the pipe 11. Reaction product is sent to the ion exchange resin packed column 14 and electrolysis is stopped after carrying our adsorption treatment. Then, the column 14 is taken away and N, N'-dimethyl 4, 4'-bipyridinium chloride is recovered desorbing by hydrochloric acid after washing with water.
